Doomsday, also known as Judgement Day, is a day that was said to occur on May 21st,2011. First, lets talk about the man who brought this topic up to our world. Harold Camping is a very well known American-Christian radio broadcaster. Harold is famous for his predictions of the raptures of Earth and the end of the world. This rapture is supposed to be the coming of Jesus Christ along with severe natural disasters to following, showing how the world will soon be no more. In September 2004 Harold predicted this rapture, sending an extremely large number of people into great fear and cover for their lives. This rapture did not happen, and he then made his most recent prediction, that on May 21,2011 the rapture would take place and that Jesus would grace us with his presence. He also stated that five months later on October 21st,2011, Jesus Christ would then completely destroy Earth and the universe all together. Followers of Harold Camping had said that in this rapture there would be approximately 200 million people that would be raptured.
Once again, Harold Campings predictions failed. It is now past May 21,2011, and no rapture occurred. So what were his flaws in his predictions? When Camping made this early prediction of September 2004 and found that it failed, he told people it was due to some mathematical mistakes he made on the Bible, and that he really did know that it will no question take place in 2011. Charlie Campbell , director of the Always Be Ready Apologetics Ministry, shows some factual statements from the Bible showing the flaws in Campings predictions. Charlie shows that in the bible, Jesus says : "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of Heaven, but my Father only." (Matt. 24:36). Charlie, making it clear that Campings predictions are unbelievable, also shows how in verse 42 it states, "You do not know what hour your Lord is coming." (Matt 24:42), and again in verse 44, "Therefor you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." (Matt 24:44). Showing these clear verses from the Bible shows that many people, like Charlie Campbell, can believe in the Bibles teachings but do not believe in Campings predictions. It is a very sensitive subject for some people that man thinks he can predict the end of the world when they also see evidence in the Bible of us not knowing when any of this will happen. There are many other views on why Harold Campings predictions did fail. One of Campings responses to how he came to his conclusions is, " With the correct understanding that the seven days referred to in Genesis 7:4 can be understood as 7,000 years, we learn that when God told Noah there were seven days to escape worldwide destruction, he was also telling the world there would be exactly 7,000 years (1 day is 1,000 years) to escape the wrath of God that would come when he destroys the world on Judgement Day. Because Holy Infinite God is all-knowing, he knows the end from the beginning. He knew how sinful the world would become. Seven thousand years after 4990 B.C ( the year of the flood ) is the year 2011 A.D ( our calender ). " The point of this statement is to show that God says that after the day of that flood we have 7,000 years left of existence. One huge flaw in this statement is that the majority of Christians and overall followers of the Bible do not agree on the real day of the flood as it is not said, it is just a matter of math.
Of course I cannot say what is right and what is wrong, but for one man to do the math that he thinks is correct and tells the whole world when it will end is pretty extreme. Seeing as there are so many people on Earth who have different ways of interpreting the Bible, you really can never be sure what the real dates are. I do not believe in God, but that doesn't mean that I will put all of my anger towards a man that has had wrong predictions like others are doing. Obviously Harold is a strong believer of the Bible and its teachings and just has his own views on what the Bible is really saying, which everyone does. The only difference from Harold and many other followers of the Bible is that he isn't afraid to show the world what he believes in and state what he thinks he knows. I do not believe that anyone knows when the world will end, or if there is a God if he will ever show up. I believe that it will come at a time where no one expects it, and if it happens then so be it. I will not try and create drama, like some people do, towards a man who is stating his opinion. When you really think about this though, it is crazy how many people believe one man. It brings me back to the times of events like Charles Manson. When there are a group of people who believe in a certain thing, and one man or woman who stands up to be the leader and to make their opinion known, it is amazing how many people become followers and will do and listen to anything that that one person says. The human mind is a crazy thing to look in to. So many of the largest events with the most impact on peoples lives have been due to hundreds, upon thousands, upon millions of people believing in the power of one person. So yes, there was no rapture that took place on September 2004, and once again Camping was wrong on his latest prediction, but who knows what he will predict next. I do know, however, that no matter how many times his predictions fail, he will always have followers and always have an impact on peoples lives all over the world. If there was one thing I could wish upon people it is that if they were to know, or to believe that the world is going to end, that they wouldn't do what they are doing and spend there time preparing, worrying, and fretting over the end of us. People should still live their lives with happiness and adventure and not stop because of any predictions, because no matter what life is short and we need to make the most of it.
Here is a video showing Harold Campings impact on the people in our world.
How did Camping become so popular in the Christian world? Well, his radio station, Family Radio, began in 1961. The point of Family Radio was for listeners of the Christian decent to call in with questions on passages of the Bible. There main goal was to find the meanings to certain passages, and they believed that Camping would have the answers. Camping gave the listeners answers to the meanings of these passages and the interpretations of them. Although he did predict September 2004 as the rapture day at first, and it obviously failed, you would think that people would loose faith in him. This however is not true, today the Family Radio is still going strong with more than 150 radio stations in the United States alone. These radio programs come in all different languages and cultures. Obviously people still follow him and believe that in the end he does know what is going to happen to us.
